Ready For A 2021 Challenge? Sign Up For Veganuary!

Ready for a 2021 challenge? Right on! The new year is right around the corner. “New year, new me” blah blah, we’ve all heard that before! But leaving aside the cliche, here’s a fact: 2020 was a life-changing year for EVERYONE. No exceptions. So who doesn’t want to start off 2021 with the right foot after all the ups and downs of 2020?

Now, if you do care about sustainability, the environment, the animals, and of course, your own health (which I bet you do if you’re visiting my blog, duh!), and you wish to change your habits and be more eco-friendly, I’ve got a wonderful New Year’s Resolution idea for you!

Join Veganuary.

What is that? Sounds like a vegan diary.

You’re getting very close!

Veganuary is a UK non-profit organization that promotes veganism by encouraging people to follow a plant-based lifestyle for the month of January and throughout the rest of the year.

Over a million people worldwide have decided to take part since the year 2014.

When you sign up, you get FREE recipe ideas, meal plans, shopping tips, health and environmental info and lots of incentives! Don’t know how to cook or get started? Don’t worry at all. They’ve got you covered!

The organization is setting a target of 500,000 people worldwide, gearing up for their biggest year to date! As you all know, 2020 was a year of challenges and self-reflection for so many of us. Lockdowns all over the world have forced people to cook from scratch and be more aware of what they are putting in their bodies. Hence why hundreds of thousands have decided to make the pledge to a more conscious living for health, animals and the environment.

Is this hitting close to home yet?

Even large multinational companies like Nestle, PwC, EY, Bloomberg and many more are backing up the campaign and encouraging their employees to sign up for the challenge.

Some small tips I could give you if you’re signing up:

  • Don’t beat yourself up if you accidentally eat something that contains sneaky milk or dairy ingredients -I certainly made mistakes in the beginning and that’s ok-, or if you take a not-so-accidental bite of your friend’s hot dog. These things could happen, but don’t let anyone else make you feel bad or guilty about it.
  • Meal prep can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Use every resource available to simplify your process and you’ll have yourself a game-changer!
  • If you have a very limited budget (as I used to in the beginning), check my post about How To Grocery Shop and Save Money. You’ll find great tips that will help you with your budget! You will also have access to shopping tips from the Veganuary team.
  • Have an open mind to learn. A common myth is that being vegan is so restrictive. Here’s the truth: a new world will open up to you. I discovered so many new flavours and foods than the ones I removed. It might be a lot to learn at first, but trust me, you’ll get there.
  • Keep it simple. I am not a chef. You probably aren’t either. There are many simple, quick recipes to try that turn out super tasty! For instance, vegan pancakes with three simple ingredients: one banana, one cup of oats and one cup of plant-based milk. Voila!
  • Veganize your fridge. If you have lots of non-vegan items, give them away to a friend or someone in needs (please don’t even think about throwing them out!). Make sure you stock up with a variety of vegan alternatives for your favourite products so that you can stay on track!
  • Find an accountability partner. Having extra support will make your journey even easier! And let’s face it, it is fun! Find a friend who may be willing to take up the challenge with you, or connect with someone on social media who’s doing the challenge too.
  • Don’t aim for perfection. And I cannot stress this enough as people have the misconception this is all or nothing, black or white. You will make mistakes, slip up and fall for cravings, maybe cheat and get discouraged. But let it go and get back up! The world needs millions of people doing veganism imperfectly than a few doing it perfectly. Take your time and enjoy your journey!
  • Don’t mind the vegan police, but most importantly, don’t join them. Please, just don’t. The “vegan police” is this sort of judgmental group of nit-picky vegans on a high horse looking down on people with a superiority complex, deciding who does and who does not deserve to be considered vegan. Their advocacy may work on a few but it is proven to be counterproductive from a communications and social psychology standpoint. Don’t be surprised if you see this same attitude coming from non-vegans as well (which is even worse! lol).
  • Just get started, don’t overcomplicate it, have fun with it and before you even know it, a plant-based lifestyle will become second nature to you!

Being willing to look at things without prejudice is often what leads you to discover new and extraordinary places. I was personally the biggest meat lover ever and any person that knows me can testify to this. So if I was able to change my stance, anyone can!

There is a downside to it though, and be warned… Your only regret will be not doing it sooner 💁🏾‍♂️

Happy Veganuary to y’all!
